This piece is a self-portrait. Between eight and eleven, my best friend was a shepherd and border collie mix that I named Lady, after my favourite movie at the time, Lady and the Tramp. I picked her out of a litter of eight pups. She stood out. She was so quietly sweet, with a lump on the top of her head, like in the cartoons, and a small white star on her forehead. She was perfect. This painting is based on a photo taken just after she had her own litter of eight. :)

These beautiful prairie birds are on the small side compared to other sparrows. They inhabit large, dry prairie areas with tall grasses and scattered shrubs and are weak fliers so stay close to the ground. Their domed nests are skillfully built, hidden at the bases of grass clumps.

Eelgrass plays a vital role in marine habitats. Besides sheltering young fish, invertebrates, and spawned eggs, it is a source of food for many. This beautiful seagrass improves water quality by producing oxygen, filtering pollution, and storing greenhouse gases. Furthermore, it traps sediment and reduces wave action, which allows a stable substrate to form, reducing shoreline erosion. So many roles for such a delicate grass.

I came across an old black-and-white photo of a woman holding a fawn, and I saw myself in a few years. It's one of my daydreams to hold a baby fawn and to care for it. I love our natural world. I feel the most at home when I'm the only person around, in the middle of the deep wilderness with all of the sweet wild things.
